141 Eyewear: socially conscious commerce

141 Eyewear design glasses frames are made in Japan from acetate. However the main selling point of their frames isn’t their stylishness or the handmade craftsmenship, but that the consumer can feel good about their purchase. The clue is in the name: for every pair of glasses bought another pair will be donated. Here is a film that they made about their business.

The first time I came across this concept was the OLPC project which offered the devices to western consumers and built into the price was another device getting sent abroad. For a number of reasons this got overshadowed by netbooks and now the iPad. But that doesn’t invalidate the principle of social commerce.
