I love how gloriously inappropriate this vintage Flintstones advert is now with its combination of smoking and misogyny – a kind of animated Mad Men but without the glamour. I suspect this was from 1960/61 when Winston cigarettes were a sponsor of The Flintstones when it initially aired on American television.
It also goes to show how wide an audience cartoons (which are now confined to Saturday morning as kid’s product placement vehicles) had in the 1950s and 1960s. The closest comparison now would be reality television which seems to cross generational boundaries in a similar way. We should bring back into the mainstream adult-watchable cartoons.
As a side note, I don’t know if online tobacconists are really hot on SEO (search engine optimisation) or whether RJR Nabisco have been doing negative SEO but it was really hard to find the official site of the cigarette brand on Google and I resorted to finding it via its Wikipedia page in the end.
