Jargon Watch: mancession

Bloomberg had an article on how the changing nature of the Japanese economy moving from manufacturing to service was affecting different parts of the population. Service industries were looking to employee women creating what the article called a ‘mancession’ which adversely affected male unemployment rates. This has had a number of effects: more pressure on households as women become the sole bread winner affects consumer spending making it even harder for the Japanese economy to kick start. It has also affected the already deficient birth rate, causing it to decline further and faster as less people can afford to have a family.
