Looking at Monocle magazine

I was looking at Monocle magazine and there was something about their illustrations for a while which gave me a kind of deja vu feeling. Then when I saw this cover for a supplement about Taiwan I had a brain wave.

The playfulness and the colour reminded me of children’s books. specifically Miroslav Sasek’s This is… series of children’s books. We used to have these at my primary school and as an adult I purchased This is Hong Kong from Gosh! Comics in London.

Whilst the style isn’t exactly the same, the use of colour and gentle playfulness in the designs certainly implies a linkage. I think this is one of the reasons why Monocle is hip, a pleasure to read and yet has engaging serious content, whereas The Economist is just serious.
