Amerislump is a phrase coined by Foreign Policy columnist Joshua Keating to describe the psychological, cultural and economic decline of the US in both absolute terms and in comparison to other nations on the ascendancy; notably India and China. It is as much about American’s continued willingness to play a leadership role on the world stage as its ability to do so. It is about collective creative bankruptcy and a crisis of identity as it is about economic issues.
The measures of decline range from:
- Encouraging Chinese tourists to shop in the US
- Having roads so poor that a German motor-car is needed
- Declining beer sales
- Declining cocaine sales in New York
