Friday is music day at work and each of us kicked in four songs that would be played on shuffle via Spotify. This posed a number of questions for me, I thought about the wider audience in the office who vary from MOR to cheese-tastic pop, what would be music that I could work by and at the same time tried to pick something that reflected me.
Here is what I came up with:
- Johnny Cash – Wichita Lineman – Johnny Cash was best known for covering other people’s songs and making them his own. Wichita Lineman was a middle-of-the-road classic; Cash puts the loneliness back into the song
- Wonder Girls – 2 Different Tears – whilst Nobody was their best known track in the west, 2 Different Tears has an amazing layered production behind the band. The video is a tripped out homage to Austin Powers and Mork & Mindy
- La Coka Nostra – The Stain – at the other end of my musical tastes, La Coka Nostra is an ensemble based around the former members of the House of Pain. Everlast takes the lead on this track and its the most office-friendly of their work as they bring a distinctly underground hip-hop with a blue-collar Irish-American perspective
- Renegade Soundwave – Women respond to bass – Renegade Soundwave is my antidote to the early 1990s commercial dance music beloved of some of my colleagues. Renegade Soundwave or RSW made more serious dance music and this is one of my favourites
