Jargon watch: peak car

Time magazine described peak car as:

…the point at which car ownership and miles driven per vehicle level off, and then decline…

The name itself is an oblique nod to the work done by M. King Hubbert around predicting oil production in the 1950s. The factors driving peak car include:

  • Telecommuting
  • The rising price of running a car including fuel
  • Unemployment
  • Online shopping
  • Moves away from suburban to urban living

Peak car has already been reached in:

  • The UK
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • The US
