Observations from the UK: OTT messenger platforms go mainstream

Reading Time: < 1 minute

At the time I left the UK, OTT messenger platforms weren’t that popular; some of my friends used Viber as an antidote to the drop in quality that Skype has undergone since before the Microsoft acquisition, a few had WhatsApp and no one who wasn’t a social media geek had heard of KakaoTalk, LINE or Weixin/WeChat. Move forward 12 months and messenger services were much more top-of-mind.

There isn’t the kind of ubiquity that you see in Korea with KakaoTalk or Hong Kong with WhatsApp but there is awareness of the services. WeChat has immediate brand recognition amongst people that I had talked to and WhatsApp seemed to be increasingly popular.
