Looking back to when I started this blog, it would have been reasonable to expect an inevitable march of retailing from offline to online. Amazon was on a tear and search advertising volumes were increasing year on year. By the time I was at Yahoo! search advertising (focused on online retailing) counted for about half of all revenue for the company.

At that time Yahoo! had a Spotify-like subscription streaming music service that was viewed as a threat to Apple’s iTunes download only offering. When I worked there Yahoo Music was the number one online music site in terms of audience reach and total time spent by consumers on the site. Also display advertising was much bigger for brands than it is today and Yahoo! was guaranteed a good share of the online marketing spend from any movie launch at the time.

The reality of online retailing, was slower than our expectations. While COVID drove an increase in online retailing there has also been corresponding innovations in retailing as well.

Amongst the pioneers in this change have been luxury brands like Burberry and Nike, who brought digital into their stores to provide a superior customer experience.

Adidas brought manufacturing into its stores with its speedfactory experiment, allowing for fast time to market and customisation.

Supreme changed the cadence of retailing with the Thursday morning ‘drop’  which saw queues outside stores. Every Thursday became a launch day as far as their customers where concerned. The queue has moved from Apple’s annual cadence, to every week.

    I couldn’t avoid doing a post on Afghanistan given what had been going on this week. The Afghanistan conflict posed a number of interesting questions about:

    • What privacy and security means for the people left behind in Afghanistan in the digital age
    • Why strategy is seldom a teacher and several countries have made the same mistake in Afghanistan – (Britain did so twice!)
    • The failure of intelligence in Afghanistan reminded me of the failure of intelligence agencies to realise that the fall of the Berlin Wall would happen. There was also a failure to underhand who the players were and their motivations in Afghanistan
    • What will Afghanistan mean for Pakistan moving forwards? Once out, the west has the perfect opportunity to shun Pakistan; which will leave the country vulnerable to Chinese predatory practices

    The US Is Removing Records of Its War in Afghanistan From the InternetLives are on the line here, but helping them may mean destroying—even if temporarily—the memory of the war and all that happened. It’s a horrible problem to face. One potential solution would be for the U.S. and its allies to take as many Afghan refugees as want to flee the country. – it assumes that the Taliban and supporters like the Pakistani ISI intelligence agency haven’t been caching this material themselves over the years. As security researchers, we know the value of end-to-end encryption, which protects data from third-party access. But we’re also horrified that CSAM is proliferating on encrypted platforms. And we worry online services are reluctant to use encryption without additional tools to combat CSAM. We sought to explore a possible middle ground, where online services could identify harmful content while otherwise preserving end-to-end encryption. The concept was straightforward: If someone shared material that matched a database of known harmful content, the service would be alerted. If a person shared innocent content, the service would learn nothing. People couldn’t read the database or learn whether content matched, since that information could reveal law enforcement methods and help criminals evade detection. Knowledgeable observers argued a system like ours was far from feasible. After many false starts, we built a working prototype. But we encountered a glaring problem

    Our system could be easily repurposed for surveillance and censorship. The design wasn’t restricted to a specific category of content; a service could simply swap in any content-matching database, and the person using that service would be none the wiser. 
    A foreign government could, for example, compel a service to out people sharing disfavored political speech. That’s no hypothetical: WeChat, the popular Chinese messaging app, already uses content matching to identify dissident material. India enacted rules this year that could require pre-screening content critical of government policy. Russia recently fined Google, Facebook and Twitter for not removing pro-democracy protest materials. 
    We spotted other shortcomings. The content-matching process could have false positives, and malicious users could game the system to subject innocent users to scrutiny.

    Unilever installs a detergent refill machine in Mumbai | Trendwatching – this all feels like things have gone full circle. My Mum and Dad growing up as children in rural Ireland talked about how many dry goods products were sold by weight in the village store. My Granny used to keep spices and flavourings for baking in a bucket sized tin that she’d been gifted decades before by the village store owner. Used packaging was a community asset rather than a liability. The biscuits were sold by the dozen in a paper bag by the shopkeeper. I can just about remember the village store and its long time owner Mrs Paddy Kelly, (Mr Kelly had died decades ago but I have no idea what Mrs Kelly’s name was). By the time I was born, it was more like a modern convenience store, with a farm supplies store attached. Electricity had come to the farm when I was three or four, so we had a fridge and an icebox – ideal for a block of HB vanilla ice cream that came back from the shop wrapped in newsprint to try and keep it cold.

  • Video arcade and other things

    Vintage video arcade

    Found footage shot of a hvideo arcade in Tokyo, Japan. The footage was apparently filmed in June 1979. A few things that surprised me about the video arcade:

    • I didn’t realise how nostalgic I would feel for the vintage Space Invaders cabinet design. I had played one a number of times but wasn’t any good at it
    • I was surprised to see English language on the screens rather than Japanese. Usually games had to get translated into English for use outside Japan
    • The table service to table top games was really interesting. I remember seeing a few of those glass table cabinets in pubs and motorway services cafes (usually not plugged in). The use case in Tokyo was much more social than arcade designs became with stand up cabinets
    • The 1960s era music playing in the background, I was expecting more current for the time western and Japanese pop

    Liam ‘Aidyn’ Fitzpatrick

    I knew Liam from my time in Hong Kong. He’s a journalist, a muso and so much more. He did an interview and picked a playlist on the Beats & Peaces podcast hosted by Jeanette Slack for Clockenflap. Think of it as a cooler version of Desert Island Discs.

    Liam shares his love of post-punk music and the kind of material that I imagine would have been on the turntable at Q magazine. His love of Japan might seem odd, given the discussions around cultural appropriation now, but I think that his experience has never been more important. Jeanette and Liam also get on tear on the importance of ambience in restaurants and why music programming in restaurants is so important. You can listen to the podcast here.

    Skateboarding

    Nike has been having a great Olympics kitting out some of the skateboarding gold medals. Skating has featured prominently in advertisements targeting women to do sports.

    Wieden + Kennedy have put together an advert that evokes vintage Disney with its style. The descriptor of ‘New Fairies’ made me think of the content by Korean professional long boarder Ko Hyjoo.

    There is Tangerine Dream documentary to support the Tangerine Dream Zeitraffer exhibition at the Barbican Music Library.

    Michael Malone

    Michael Malone was famous to me as a writer on the San Jose Mercury News online site. Michael Malone had been a long time writer on the paper and chronicled all the happenings in Silicon Valley. Michael Malone is now the co-host of The Silicon Insider podcast. In the past he has written numerous books covering different parts of the history of Silicon Valley. So he has a unique perspective on the place and the technology sector.

    Michael Malone was interviewed by NBC reporter Scott Budman on behalf of the Computer History Museum based in Silicon Valley.

    Dune trailer

    Denis Villenueve is the director that Hollywood seems to trust with difficult to tell films like the Blade Runner sequel. He is also the director who is likely to get closest Alejandro Jodorowsky’s attempt to film Dune in the mid-1970s. Green screen and digital cinema offer Villenueve tools that Jodorowsky could only have dreamed of four decades earlier.

    Junk sleep

    US speciality retailer Mattress Firm is doing a couple of new things with its adverts featuring Lev Schreiber. First of all was the concept in the creative of ‘junk sleep’ that reminded me of J Walter Thompson’s early work for Odorono, an early anti-perspirant that invented the concept of ‘body odor’ from a marketing perspective. People had always been smelly, but it was JWT that broached the subject in the adverts.

    Junk sleep feels like a similar type of concept. As a strategist, I like the concept. The second aspect is the trippy nature of the ads which captures the feeling of sleep deprivation really well.

    Apple watch

    Apple put together a fun ad for health tracking on the Apple Watch. It gets over many of the activities that the Apple Watch can track.

    It reminded me (unintentionally) of The Court of King Caractacus, made famous by Australian entertainer Rolf Harris. Harris had a five decade career in show business that ended in ignominy when he was convicted for 12 indecent assaults on against four girls.

    Emirates and Qatar Airways

    COVID-19 disrupted the airline industry since people weren’t flying. The asymmetry of opening up seems to be hammering the Middle East airline ‘super hub’ model according to this video by Sam Chui. Chui posits that super hubs offer the opportunity for a super spreading event and there is likely to be an uptake in customers wanting to fly direct in the immediate aftermath of COVID-19.

    If this is true, then there will be a knock on effect for duty free retailing and luxury sales as well.

  • Kyoto Animation & other things this week

    Kyoto Animation

    Kyoto Animation was devastated last year when an anime obsessive set fire to their studio, killing a number of the animators there. Anime artists get paid little anyway. So fans collect donations for them to help them get by. The Kyoto Animation incident made things even more tragic.

    To announce the studio’s comeback Kyoto Animation developed two 30 second television spots. Let’s hope that TV networks, film studios and advertisers respond to their return and the studio goes from strength to strength.

    This first one is called Meji – so roughly Victorian through to Edwardian times. The protagonists then get transferred into the future.

    The second Kyoto Animation video is called Imagination

    Hajime Sorayama x Be@brick x 2G

    Hajime Sorayama has designed a golden Be@rbrick for Japanese retailer 2G. It will be available as a lottery facilitated drop at their Osaka and Tokyo stores. More at Mediacom

    Alumination documentary

    Airstream caravans are a design icon. They were made from aluminium in the post-war period. Aluminium alloy was a wonder material that revolutionised aviation from its previous materials of canvas over wood.

    Alumination tracks the history of the Airstream and the cultural impact that it had on American culture. It redefined freedom for a post-Cowboy age.

    Gravity driven ropeway

    Tom Scott usually comes up with interesting thought provoking invention. In this video he looks at an aerial ropeway that conveys shale to a brickworks near by. It transfers 300 tons of materials each day under the power of gravity and careful timing of full and empty returning buckets.

    Weiden & Kennedy’s 5G Future for Three UK was banned this week following a complaint to the ASA by Vodafone. It is a lovely piece of craft though.

    McDonald’s Japan 50th birthday

    McDonald’s Japan put together an amazing ad to celebrate 50 years of McDonald’s in Japan with its first restaurant in the Ginza area of Tokyo. This was some three years before it opened in the UK.

    The protagonist, actress Yoshiko Miyazaki is digitally altered to look much younger for the 1971 sections of the advertisement. There is even a making of film for the ad here.
